How to prepare roses for winter

When preparing roses for winter, you should know that not all roses need to be covered. Ancient and species roses, as well as (with slight exceptions) tea, Bourbon and Chinese in shelters do not need. It is necessary to cover all roses of modern species for the winter, the exception is a group of wrinkled rose hybrids (shrub rose).

In order for roses to prepare some agricultural receptions as best as possible, which, in turn, will achieve a better ripening. Starched plants will be much better to endure frosts. These techniques:

From the middle of summer they stop feeding roses with nitrogen fertilizers. From August to early autumn, it is necessary to feed phosphorus-potassium fertilizers (they lead to growth stop, ripening and increasing the stability of roses to the cold period).

With the onset of autumn, the growing shoots should be pinned. As a result, useful elements will be deposited in fabrics and kidneys.

To a minimum, loosening and watering should be reduced, not to remove the flowers that have already faded (in order not to stimulate growth).

Starting in October, the leaves should be cut off, thereby depriving roses of breathing and nutrition through the leaves. Then the plant will be forced to prepare itself for the winter.

The main and main covering material for roses is snow. And foliage, spruce and lutrail is used only to detain snow.

Shoots must bend to the ground and fill them with snow. If there is no snow for a long time, then the rose bushes can die, although it is covered with other covering materials.

It should be remembered that roses cannot be covered too early. Because when cooling to minus 2-8 degrees, carbohydrates begin to turn into fats and sugar, these substances protect roses from low temperatures. And yet, roses are very difficult to endure sharp and long temperature differences, spending all their accumulated carbohydrates accumulated on this.

Before covering the plants, it is necessary to dig them. The shoots of climbing roses and sheep are bent to the ground and laid on spruce branches. So that the bushes do not break, they should be digging from the side where it is planned to bend them, then the shoots are pinched to the ground.

After that, the bushes need to be hilled (pour dry soil to the base of the plant, the mound should be at least 30 centimeters). This retains the kidneys, which in turn allows trimming in the spring in any way. Such a shelter retains the temperature for some time much higher than outside (with a small amount of snow).

But it should be remembered that when hilling, you do not need to rake the ground from flower beds (this exposes the roots), but you need to pour fresh loose earth, compost or humus. Additionally, the land of the rows can be insulated with an old straw manure, rummaged in leaves or crushed bark of trees.

In the last days of October – early November (after the earth is somewhat freezed), roses must be closed completely. It is recommended to do this in good weather.

The easiest material that is used for shelter for the winter of roses spruce or dry foliage. The thickness of the layer of these materials must be made at least 10 centimeters.

A more reliable air-drying method is considered to be a shelter. You need to do it like this. Install the frames over the roses bushes (the height of which is up to 60 centimeters), on the side and on top you need to lay the insulation (for example, cardboard or peramin). Everything should be covered with a film. The ends of the shelter are left open until the temperature drops to minus 10 degrees. But at the same time, it is necessary to constantly monitor the plants and in the case of warming – the end sides must be opened and ventilated by the plants.

As you can see, to keep roses from frost in winter, you need to make a lot of efforts.
