Nowadays, skyscrapers are reaching for new height records. Enormous tunnels connect new transport hubs, and incredible bridges stretch over huge distances. Progress does not stand still. Everything around is developing twice as fast as ever.
Many gigantic engineering and infrastructure projects have been completed all over the world, and somewhere incredible projects are just getting ready for delivery.
The Panama Canal has long played an important role for the whole world. Let us recall that the canal began operating in 1914, but over the course of its century-long history, along with technical progress, the sizes of sea vessels have also changed. In this regard, the width of the Panama Canal no longer meets modern safety requirements and the speed of passage of ships.
It is for this reason that 11 years ago it was decided to expand the existing Panama Canal. During this time, 4.4 million cubic meters of concrete were needed to expand the canal. It is noteworthy that in addition to expanding the canal, builders are also deepening it so that huge modern ships can navigate it. The project is scheduled for completion in 2016. The new extended section of the canal will be 3.8 miles (4.83 kilometers) long.
