How to make injections to a cat

Many cat owners relate to their fluffy favorites as family members. Therefore, if the animal gets sick, then the loving owner begins to worry about his pet strongly. To cure a cat, they are ready to buy expensive medicines and contact the best specialists. Very often veterinarians prescribe subcutaneous or intramuscular injections to cats. And at this moment the owner covers panic – he does not know how to make injections to the cat on his own. Meanwhile, there is nothing complicated in this.

Preparation for injection

Preparation for the procedure is one of the most important points. Injections should be done at the same time, and before the start of the procedure-to give the pet something tasty. This is necessary so that the injection time is associated with a cat with a pleasant moment. In addition, you need to prepare a syringe with medicine in advance so as not to scare the animal once again with extraneous objects. Talking with a pet you need in an even and calm voice. After everything is prepared, the cat must be put on a convenient surface and put a treat next to it.

Subcutaneous injections

If the animal behaves calmly, you should tightly take the fold located on the withers and pull it off. Then you need to take a syringe with your free hand and enter the needle under the skin. It is necessary to make sure that the needle has not passed through the other side of the skin fold and is in the subcutaneous space. If everything is in order, then you can enter the medicine under the skin. All movements should be confident and smooth. After you introduced all the medicine, you can remove the needle and then tell the cat something affectionate.

When introducing subcutaneous injections, it is necessary to pay attention to the following points:

When choosing a place to introduce a subcutaneous injection, you should choose a part where you can easily assemble the skin in a fold. The most favorable place for this place are located in the area of the blades and the lower part of the cat’s back. It is recommended to collect the skin in the fold with the index and thumb of the left hand. The syringe must be firmly held with your right hand. The needle is picked to a depth of 1-2 cm into the base of the skin fold.

Intramuscular injections

Intramuscular injection should be done in the muscles located behind the femur.  You need to choose the thickest part of the thigh. But before entering the needle, you need to fix the animal. To do this, put the cat on the right side, press the hind legs to the floor with your right hand, and hold the front with your left hand. The animal must be kept very tight so that it does not jerk at the most crucial moment.

The needle is introduced to a depth of 1.5-2 cm into the muscle thickness. The angle of the needle relative to the surface of the skin should be slightly smaller.
